Field Clinic Surgery Manager - Full Time

 

Underdog Animal Rescue and Rehab located in beautiful Moab, Utah, has an opening for a Full Time Veterinary Technician to run the surgery side of our monthly field clinics on the Native American reservations of the Four Corners region. Experience in surgical field clinics, emergency and/or shelter medicine is a plus. 

Our ideal candidate is enthusiastic about the opportunity to have an impact on a highly underserved community while tackling a challenging variety of tasks in a fast paced environment. If you are interested in field medicine and confident in your ability to make decisions on your feet, with and without the direction of a vet, this may be a great fit for you. This position is more than a job, and will not suit every vet tech. A “working interview” (paid) is essential for the candidate to have a full understanding of the role .

Responsibilities at clinics include, but are not limited to:

  • Attending one surgery clinic a month on the Navajo Nation - 3 days
  • Ensuring that the veterinary staff is trained on the use of our equipment 
  • Being available to assist the surgery team with questions, concerns and emergencies
  • Managing the surgery flow from check in to induction, surgery, recovery and discharge
  • Communicating and training clinic volunteers (recovery, sterilization, surgical assistance, etc.)
  • Troubleshooting anesthesia machines, oxygen equipment, and sterilization equipment
  • Performing pre-surgical patient examinations
  • Triage and emergency stabilization of dogs and cats with indirect supervision from a veterinarian
  • Ensuring adherence to protocols, policies, and procedures to maintain a safe surgical environment
  • Professionally communicating and collaborating with veterinarians, technicians, volunteers, support staff, and the public to ensure smooth and efficient clinic flow.

Responsibilities between clinics include:

  • Managing surgery clinic inventory and ordering of supplies
  • Scheduling surgery appointments and managing the surgery waitlist
  • Managing post-operative patient concerns
  • Packing and unpacking the mobile unit and trailer
  • Driving the mobile unit to field locations
  • Assisting with animal care and treatments at our shelter facility
  • Confirming clinic locations
  • Recruiting and scheduling veterinarians and technicians based on their skills
  • Assuring that accurate medical records and statistics are kept current

Essential skill requirements:

  • Accurate medical recordkeeping in clinic and shelter management programs
  • Understanding of disease management in an area of highly unvaccinated animals
  • Proficient in medical terminology and be familiar with common drugs and protocols
  • Ability to triage medical cases quickly and appropriately
  • Work with individuals and colleagues from diverse communities and cultures
  • Ability to conduct oneself in a professional manner in all situations
  • Ability to explain treatments and conditions to clients in a compassionate and understandable manner
  • Patient restraint using principles of Fear Free animal handling
  • Calculate, administer and properly manage fluids and medications
  • Perform venipunctures and place IV catheters
  • Prep wounds and apply bandages
  • Monitor vital signs
  • Properly place an endotracheal tube
  • Induce and maintain anesthesia
  • Care for common urgent cases, including wound management, ear infections, and euthanasia
  • Must be able to lift 40# alone, or more with a team member
  • Handling and documenting controlled substances and knowledge of regulations related to same
  • Experience with dogs and cats of all sizes, temperaments, and medical status
  • Patient discharge and client education
  • Maintaining a clean and sanitary work environment
  • Perform routine, in-house diagnostic tests

Field Clinic Vet Tech - Full Time

Experience in surgical field clinics, emergency and/or shelter medicine is a plus. 

Our ideal candidate is enthusiastic about impacting a highly underserved community and tackling a challenging variety of tasks in a fast paced environment. If you are interested in field medicine and confident in your ability to make decisions on your feet, this may be a great fit for you. This position is more than a job, and will not suit every vet tech. A “working interview” (paid) is encouraged for the candidate to have a full understanding of the role .

This position works closely with the Clinic Surgery Manager to ensure the health and safety of clinic animals. While the focus of the position is vaccines and wellness, the successful tech will be skilled in induction, placing IVs, pre-medicating, recovery, and surgical support of vets as needed.

Essential Job Responsibilities:  

  • Preparation for spay and neuter clinics including helping to load and unload the mobile unit and clinic trailer
  • Attend one clinic a month on the Navajo Nation - Thursday evening - Monday morning
  • Effectively communicate and train volunteers in the vaccine and wellness side of the clinic 
  • Efficiently manage and inventory the wellness and vaccine clinic supplies and meds 
  • Comfortable driving the mobile clinic to field locations - as needed
  • Help recruit volunteers for clinics and follow up data entry needs
  • Work with the Surgery Manager to recruit and assign volunteer roles at clinics
  • Assure that wellness records are entered to the clinic management program
  • Understand and implement appropriate sanitation protocols to prevent disease spread

Mental, Physical, and Communication Demands:

Possible Animal Care work between clinics as time permits:

  • Administering daily medications and treatments to dogs on the ranch and the Underdog cats
  • Assisting with intakes by vaccinating, evaluating and microchipping dogs as they come into our care
  • Adding medical memos to our shelter management program as needed 
  • Using your experience to find solutions for the medical needs of foster dogs 
  • Run Parvo, 4DX, Giardia, as directed by staff or protocol
  • General Parvo, or other illness care when needed
  • Wound care as needed

Animal Care Staff 

 

JOB TITLE: Animal Care Staff

REPORTS TO: Animal Care Manager

SCHEDULE: Varies depending on need

SALARY: $39,250/yr, fulltime, exempt

Job Summary:

Provide consistently high standards of services to support the mission of Underdog Animal Rescue and Rehab (UDARR). We seek individuals who are passionate about animal welfare, who will embody the UDARR values and culture of empathy, and possess strong interpersonal skills to interact with animals, staff, volunteers, fosters, and potential adopters.

Essential Job Responsibilities:  

  • Provide daily enrichment, exercise, and socialization for dogs
  • Groom animals including bathing, brushing, and trimming
  • Handle intake of animals arriving into care
  • Follow protocols for treatment of sick animals, including blood draw and fecal tests (training provided)
  • Keep ShelterLuv, Trello, and Slack up to date multiple times a day
  • Update photos, attributes, and bios for all UDARR dogs regularly
  • Process adoption applications within 24 hours of receipt
  • Carry out adoption procedures properly and compassionately say “no” when necessary
  • Administer medication, tend to other medical needs, and follow dietary guidelines as directed by Veterinarian/medical staff or management (training provided)
  • Keep medical tasks and records up to date and schedule upcoming treatments/vaccines as needed
  • Record all pertinent behavior observations in animal profiles in ShelterLuv
  • Transport animals to local vet, off-site adoption events, and other appointments
  • Participate in social media campaign to promote adoptable dogs
  • Maintain work areas clean, clutter- free, and organized
  • Follow procedures for run/kennel cleaning to ensure animal housing areas are kept clean and sanitary
  • Check email daily, and respond within 12 hours
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by the Animal Care Manager

Ranch Hand

JOB TITLE: Ranch Hand

REPORTS TO: Animal Care Manager

RATE: $16.50/hour, Part Time, non-exempt

SCHEDULE: AM Shift-8am, PM Shift-4pm (hours vary depending on needs)

Job Summary:

Play a vital role in maintaining the health, cleanliness, and overall well-being of the dogs in our care. Primary responsibilities include feeding dogs, changing water, picking up waste, cleaning and sanitizing dog runs, and performing general housekeeping tasks, washing dog laundry, dishes, etc. We seek individuals who are passionate about animal welfare, who will embody the UDARR values, and carry out a commitment to maintaining high standards of cleanliness and animal care.

Essential Job Responsibilities:  

  • Responsible for feeding puppies and adults following the feeding order- intake date/health status
  • Follow daily procedures for run/kennel cleaning to ensure animal housing areas are kept clean and sanitary
  • Be alert, observant, and report any physical health or behavioral concerns, e.g., diarrhea, limping, eye gunk, coughing, resource guarding, overly lethargic behavior
  • Wash and sanitize bowls, water buckets, poop scoopers, brushes, crocs, etc.
  • Clean and Sanitize crates and other items on the wash deck
  • Catch up on ranch chat daily to stay up-to-date on any new information
  • Responsible for laundry, wash, dry, and fold
  • Leave all work areas clean, clutter-free, and organized at the end of each shift
  • Follow all safety guidelines to ensure a safe work environment
  • Performs other tasks as directed by management
