Socialization

When a puppy is between four weeks and nine months, they are at a crucial period where they need to be introduced to as many new interactions / items as possible such as:

  • Other dogs (as long as vaccines are up to date)
  • Common sounds such as thunder, fireworks, sirens, and vacuum cleaner. Youtube is a great resource
  • Touch - touch their feet, tail, and ears often to make future cleaning and nail trimmings easier

If the puppy is not introduced to new situations, it can cause an aversion to anything they are not used to as well as hard-to-manage behaviors in the future

When your puppy is afraid of something, instead of pushing them to interact, use an abundance of treats to ensure they have a positive experience

Enrichment

Puppies need constant entertainment otherwise they will resort to entertaining themselves.

Giving your dog a Kong or a puzzle toy will encourage them to use their minds to get to the food and teach them to chew on something other than your shoes.

Bringing a new puppy home requires preparation, patience, and consistency.

Before the Baby Arrives

  • Play baby sounds on YouTube or through a speaker, loud-start slowly and work up to trying to do this every day multiple times a day. Doing this helps the dogs get used to loud and sudden noises. If you can, use a speaker and put the speaker in a separate room than you are in.
  • Slowly increase volume
  • Reward the dogs with treats and praise at first and then slowly phase this out.
  • *Your dogs will need to get used to less attention on them so slowly phasing the rewards out during these sessions is important.
  • *When the baby first comes, do your best to use treats in the beginning again
  • Move around furniture or arrange your house accordingly now so they have time to get used to the change before the baby arrives. If you can, also introduce them to the crib, bouncers and any new items that will be in the house so they are not too scary. Any changes that you are able to make ahead of time will be much better than making all changes at once.
  • Teach your dogs cues to get off of furniture or move away from the space because you are not going to want them all over you while you are holding the baby
  • *Carry around a rolled up blanket while moving to different parts of the house, make sure there is no jumping.
  • “Four on the floor greetings” is a dog training technique ensuring all four paws remain on the ground during greetings to prevent jumping. It promotes calm behavior by ignoring the dog when they jump and rewarding them only when they are settled, often by asking for a sit.
  • Get them used to baby gates and being left out of rooms now so it is less stressful when the baby comes
  • Any kind of obedience training is also highly encouraged especially place training

Once the Baby Arrives

  • Keep treats in jars high up and around house
  • Get enrichment toys such as Kong’s, lick mats, and puzzle toys to relieve stress during especially angry baby moments
  • *Do not scold the dogs for initial reactions to the baby
  • They are going to receive less attention than they would have before the baby so making sure everyone is comfortable is very important
  • Never leave dogs and the baby unsupervised
  • *The hardest transition period is when the baby starts crawling!
  • Make sure you have baby gates available in order to provide adequate separation

Preparing a dog for a new baby is crucial to ensure safety, reduce stress for both the pet and family, and prevent behavioral issues. It allows the dog to adjust to significant, overwhelming changes in routine, sounds, and scents before the baby arrives, fostering a positive, safe, and calm introduction.

Crate Training

FB 8463

Introducing Your Pup to the Crate

Making sure your dog is comfortable in their crate is the most important thing. To do this, start by feeding them in the crate and leaving treats inside for them to find.

*Do not lock them in the crate right away

After your dog is comfortable going in and out of the crate on their own, it is time to start shutting it in short increments.

Sit right next to your dog and close them inside the crate for a few seconds while tossing them treats.

Once they can do this without pawing at the crate or crying leave them in the crate with a puzzle toy with you at home or in the room. When they are done, allow them to come out of the crate.

Remember, every dog is different and this may take more or less time than you think it will. Do not rush the process and make sure you are advancing based on your dogs needs.

Do not leave your dog in the crate for extended periods of time until they are fully comfortable.

Crate training is a highly recommended practice used to house-train puppies, ensure safety by preventing destructive chewing or swallowing of dangerous items, and provide a secure, comfortable "den" that reduces anxiety. It also simplifies travel, veterinary visits, and boarding while teaching dogs to settle and self-soothe.

Adoption Testimonials

Bo and Glenn

Shadow

I would love to share the very special and positive experience my husband and I had with Underdog Rescue and the wonderful folks who run that program. We’re both in our 60’s so we’ve adopted and rescued lots of wonderful dogs, mostly Golden Retrievers, during our time together. Man, we’ve had some awesome dogs and awesome experiences during that time!

We had recently lost our Golden and were ready to adopt another dog 2 months ago. We’re fairly new to Grand Junction so began visiting and learning about various Rescues and attending several adoption events in the area. We continued to see Underdog Rescue’s presence at the adoption events and followed them online. It didn’t take long for the perfect dog (looks, size, personality, male, etc.) to pop up on the Underdog website. We weren’t looking for a puppy – we thought a dog 2-4 years old would be a perfect fit for our other Golden who was 5. But this dog who sounded perfect was a puppy. When we met him, he was very shy and just wanted to hang with his sweet Foster Mom, Jennifer. We walked him with our dog and hung out with him, but he wasn’t very interested in us. We went with our “gut” and adopted him anyway (his name was Marshall but we changed it to Bo). I had been in contact with folks from Underdog and Jennifer for the first few days before we adopted him and for a few weeks after we took him home – they were all great! They answered every question, told me what they knew about his history and kept checking in to make sure all was going well once we brought him home.

Let me just say – this sweet puppy is the easiest dog we’ve ever rescued. Like I said, it had been a long while since we had a puppy and we thought “Oh Boy – are we ready for this??!!” Bo slept on a doggie bed right next to our bed the first night (and every night thereafter) without a peep or even stirring in the night. He immediately became fast friends with our 5 year old Golden, Jake. He was loving and frequently climbed in Jakes dog bed to lay with him throughout the day. They played together almost immediately and have grown to love each other so much.  Early on, Bo had a few accidents in the house but, other than that, NO INCIDENTS WITH ANYTHING. He has never chewed on anything except toys and bones, he’s never been aggressive with people or dogs, he learned to walk on a leash quickly and he is so sweet and so smart and absolutely the PERFECT DOG.  We never needed a kennel for training, we could leave him alone in the house and in our big one-acre yard almost immediately. We seldom leave our dogs alone but occasionally we needed to and each time was without incident….no digging in the yard, no bothering anything in the house, no getting on the furniture or chewing up anything!!  It was all amazingly easy!! I think this is a testament to the folks who brought him home from New Mexico and Jennifer.  Every person at Underdog Rescue provided this little guy with great experiences and great first memories/impressions and he came to us without a fear or any issues.

The experience has been nothing short of amazing, fun, wonderful, easy and sweet. We are madly in love with Underdog Rescue and BoBo and would adopt a dog from them again in a heartbeat. We have loved every minute of this experience and look forward to a wonderful future with BoBo and Jake.

We thank you, Underdog Rescue and Fricking Awesome Foster Mom, Jennifer for this great dog at a time when we really needed a sweet puppy to ease our hearts and make us smile after a hard loss of our sweet Golden. We appreciate you and we recently made a donation to your Program as we want you to continue to be able to provide such happy endings for folks like us and dogs like Bo. I am extremely grateful for you and the wonderful experience you provided all of us!

In the event that donations exceed the amount needed for a specific medical case or project, surplus funds will be used to support similar lifesaving efforts. Thank you for helping us continue this vital work!

I have always had ‘rez’ dogs but had no idea the depth of the stray animal population in the Four Corners reservations. I quickly fell in love with Underdog Rescue and their efforts to bring low cost spay and neuter and donation-based vaccines to these underserved areas.

COVID-19 Statement

As our community takes steps to limit the spread of COVID-19, Underdog Animal Rescue and Rehab is focused on protecting the health and well-being of the animals in our care, our staff, volunteers, and the community we serve.

The animals at Underdog are living creatures that have no other option for care and support. We are working to balance their needs with the safety of our employees and volunteers and taking reasonable precautions that won’t curtail our ability to provide necessary services, place animals, and save lives. If you are experiencing any symptoms such as high fever, a deep dry cough and/or shortness of breath please consider visiting the shelter when you are feeling better.

Please keep checking this page and our social media channels for updated information. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we navigate this situation.
